Manifesta 9 Facilities Design, Genk Belgium

Our work could be typified as transformations of the existing. For Manifesta 9 we will work with the characteristics of the existing building, the history of the mining industry, the waste of the new industries and the needs of the facilities for visitors.

LIGHT and DARKNESS
Since we are working in a former mining building, working with darkness is an important feature of the design. The main location for our work will be the basement of the site. This 6000-m2 floor has two closed facades where the building is actually dug into the ground. Visitors enter through one of two open facades. Two light facades and two dark facades result in an extremely light and a completely dark corner. By putting a gradient of artificial lighting from the light to the dark corner we intend to make this contrast stronger.

BLACK COAL and WHITE TRASH
The mining industry has been replaced by several new industries. We made a harvest map of these; an analysis of available waste streams from which we can build all facilities for the visitors. From the program we derived that we need to harvest volumes, flat surfaces, a lot of seats and one special object. Since there is a lot of transport involved in the industries, hundreds of Industrial Bulk Containers are stacking up in the area. These white plastic volumes are ideal to quickly build lightweight structures. They create identity for the facilities and light sculptures in the dark spaces. A company building furniture, has an immense amount of waterproof cut-offs. Another company can supply big bags… Ford motor company is the biggest ‘new’ industry and can deliver Ford-Mondeo parts with a little scratch that we will sculpt into an expressive and functional information desk. Because of this the info-desk will be the most evident, attention attracting, object on the ground floor….
All waste that we sourced turns out to be primarily white, most prominently the IBC-tanks with surfaces assembled from white trespa, seating consists of white big bags filled up with shredded waste. This creates a strong contrast with the black coal and the dirty, deteriorated building.

LINES and ISLANDS
One of the spatial qualities of the basement is that it actually has no direction, but, if you stand on the right points, suddenly the monumental and strong perspectives formed by its structure strike you. Some locations get their identity from specific elements; the concrete blocks, the hole to the next floor, the angled columns. In the plan we work with this by locating functions like restaurant, bookshop, info desk on these specific locations and keeping the longest lines completely free.

COMFORT for VISITORS
We want to supply an overdose of seating possibilities for the visitors by putting approximately 1000 different chairs in and outside the site. So people will feel comfortable to choose whether to sit next to the bar or restaurant or create their own seating corners or mix with other people by carrying the chairs round in the enormous space.

This project is realized in cooperation with Refunc and Rob Tak

Moes is a bar and restaurant in the basement underneath De Appel arts centre in Amsterdam. The philosophy of the restaurant is to use seasonal, local products as the basis of its menu.
2012Architects from Rotterdam designed the interior with the same philosophy: what you can get from nearby, is good.

The restaurant is designed as a sequence of spaces with different atmospheres: a gradient of sound, light and movement which goes from the entrance on the busy Prins Hendrikkade to the quite garden in the back. Lighting, acoustic, materials and ventilation are tuned in a different way for each section of the restaurant.

Through a harvest map several waste materials within a radius of few kilometres were found: cable reels from the street works, light boxes from Schiphol Airport, rubber rolls from the print industry, acoustic ceiling tiles from offices buildings. All these materials have been re-used in a functional way to shape the interior of the restaurant. The cable reels have been dismounted and the wooden core reused for benches and the vault, while the metallic components like threads, steel plates and rings have been reused for the tables. The thin metallic table plates are clad with rubber print rolls. The Schiphol light boxes are turned into the lighting system of the restaurant but also into a display system for wine and other bottles. The acoustic tiles are used to dump the sound reverberance in different spaces of the restaurant.

In total 60% of the materials used for the interior of Moes are coming from waste material streams. The well known superuse strategy from 2012Architects strongly reduces the impact embedded in the starting up of the restaurant.
Nevertheless when studying the functioning of the restaurant and of the art centre above it is evident that a lot of food, energy and water waste streams are produced. 2012Architects is therefore developing another strategy, known as cyclifier, to intercept the waste heat and water as well as the organic waste and to re-use them locally to produce fish, vegetables and herbs for the kitchen.
This will turn Moes into a system that can run on much less inputs because it is able to convert waste streams from the surroundings into resources.

We’re happy to have moved into this exciting year. According to a inspiring group of trend-watchers*) 2012 will be one of creating connections on all possible levels. And we couldn’t agree more…. Last year we’ve been building on the infrastructure for this to happen: we’ve connected with 5 companies of our supply chain into a new place, the Slaak building and expect to mutually profit from each others presence this year.

Similarly excited we are about our new website Cyclifier.org that shows 80 examples of creative urban interventions to (re)establish links between waste-flows and resources for 15 different flow-types. This platform is open to everyone to learn and share about new connecting concepts.

Next to this we’re very glad to work on a variety of projects that will launch this year, all of them creating unexpected but sometimes very logical bonds: a new restaurant called Moes in Amsterdam, a showroom and office for the shoe brand Keen in Rotterdam, a workshop and museum DordtYart in Dordrecht, a self feeding visitor- and business-center called CoCasa in Amsterdam, and we are working on the recycle centre in Maastricht. But we’ll also create the interior for the Manifesta 2012 and work on an built experiment for the Vitra foundation.

We are very thankful for everyone that contributed to our work to grow, and hope the year 2012 will give many opportunities to (re)connect with you.

For everyone that is curious what will happen to our name, we have to keep that a surprise till the 20th of december when we’ll make an announcement. If you would like to make a guess, you can tweet your suggestion @2012Architecten. The most close prediction will receive a suitable gift on December 21st of 2012.

The team of 2012Architecten.

Asked to build a recycling centre we proposed Superuse strategy: Nomen est Omen. The distribution section of the building is made from discarded shipping containers. Second hand goods are reconditioned in workshops and sold in the shopping area next door. Customers deliver goods into a drive-in lobby. The building looks like an enormous display window made out of reclaimed window-frames. The roof harvests sustainable energy and water is stored in a discarded windmill blade, placed upright as a prominent landmark.
